SALT LAKE CITY- Coming off a successful weekend at the sole home meet of the year, the Utah track and field team heads to California to compete in three separate meets.
Â
"From a coaching perspective, we are trying to simulate the prelims and then finals of a Pac-12 Championship level meet, where you can look at the first event at Long Beach as a prelim and compete in the second event at Azusa Pacific on the next day and kind of act as the final if they were going to make it. It is a good simulation of competing on back-to-back days," head coach Kyle Kepler said.
Â
Utah will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays at Murdock Stadium on the campus of El Camino College. The event is set to run over a three-day span, April 13-15. Utah will have distance runners showcased in Walnut, Calif. Â
Â
The Utes will also be represented at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif. The event will be held on Thursday, April 13, at the Jack Rose Track. Utah will begin action at 10 a.m. PT in the long jump with freshmen
Ann Wingeleth and
Holly Stallman competing for the Utes.
Â
"This meet will be primarily sprinters, jumpers, middle distance, and hurdlers. This meet is a little bit smaller than Azusa Pacific will be," Kepler said.
Â
Utah will also participate in the Bryan Clay Invitational to round out this week's competition. Hosted by Azusa Pacific, the Bryan Clay Invitational will be held Thursday and Friday, April 13-14, at the Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa, Calif. Events for Utah on Thursday will be the 5000-meter run and 3000-meter steeplechase. Freshman
Poppy Tank will represent Utah in the 5,000. Seniors
Becky Sarmiento and
Dana Snell, along with freshman
Ashley Licata, will compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Â
"Azusa Pacific is a pretty well-rounded meet. It has exploded, grown, and is as big as it has ever been. The competition will be outstanding and it will be good across the board, whether they are really good regional kids or Pac-12 level kids or maybe some of our emerging, developing kids that can get a chance to compete against kids who are in a similar development path," Kepler said.
Â
"For us as a staff, it is really about putting our kids in the best competition and best situation possible and that means being in a variety of meets. We are looking forward to putting down good times and good marks," Kepler stated.
