AUSTIN, Texas – The Utah Track and Field team is set to send four Utes to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round. The preliminary competitions will take place Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27.

"I expect our kids to be excited, really give everything they have and do what they have done all year. They really need to focus in and try to give their best performance of the year. That is first and foremost what we ask for and if good things happen and we advance and qualify to move on, then obviously, we want to do that as well," said head coach
Kyle Kepler.

Utah's four athletes will compete in the west preliminary rounds hosted by the University of Texas. The three-day competition will be held at Mike A. Myres Stadium in Austin, Texas.

The Utah track and field team will be represented by freshmen
Amanda Gehrich and
Ann Wingeleth, sophomore
Christine Glasmann, and junior
Grayson Murphy.
Â
Gehrich will compete Thursday in the 1500-meter run. The race is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. MT. Gehrich ranks 30
th among the other NCAA west preliminary participants in the 1500 with her time of 4:22.78, which was recorded at the Pac-12 Championships.

Wingeleth and Glasmann will compete on Thursday to represent Utah in the field events. Wingeleth will compete in the long jump, with the event beginning at approximately 6:15 p.m. MT. Wingeleth ranks 34
th among the competition with her best mark of 6.13m earned at the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic. Glasmann will compete at approximately 2 p.m. MT in the javelin. Glasmann ranks 28
th with a mark of 47.61m, which was recorded at the UC Riverside Classic.

Murphy will represent Utah in the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5000-meter run. The steeplechase event will begin at 7:20 p.m. MT on Friday, while the 5K is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. MT on Saturday. Murphy ranks seventh overall in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a best time of 10:05.77, while ranking 16
th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:58.29. Both of these marks are school records for Utah.

"I think key is to just keep doing what you have been doing all year because it has gotten you to this level and there is no need to make changes now. We will try to go down there and take care of business, trying to get some people through to the next round so we can go back to Eugene," Kepler said.

Qualifying individuals will advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 7-10.
