EUGENE, Ore. – Utah's
Grayson Murphy finished fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase to earn first-team All-America honors on Saturday afternoon at the 2017 NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Â
"To come from where she was a year ago to where she is now to be a first-team All-American and fifth in the country, it is just something that is so hard to put words to. She is extremely coachable and works so hard. Probably more important than those things, she believes in herself and is super competitive. Grayson competed very hard today and gave a great effort today," head coach
Kyle Kepler said.
Â
Murphy finished with a time of 9:53.66, just above her personal-best time of 9:53.04, which she ran in Thursday's semifinal. She was nearly tripped up very early in the race but quickly came up among the top five in a tight pack of runners. The field started to spread out with four laps remaining and she spent several laps battling with Penn State's Tori Gerlach, who finished third.
Â
"She has had an incredible year and had huge improvements. It was fun to see her cap it off with such an effort like she gave today. To run on the 9:53 mark in back-to-back instances, which was about a 10 second PR, shows how competitive she ran," Kepler stated.
Â
Murphy is one of 12 Utah All-Americans in track (indoor and outdoor). Utah's last first-team All-American in outdoor track was Amanda Mergaert, who finished third in the 1,500 meters in 2013.
Â
"It is a total team effort from our coaches, athletic training staff, and teammates to get her here and it is so much fun to see her succeed. We are extremely grateful to have her back next year. It is a great day to be a Ute and was a great way for the final Utah student-athlete to end the season with her first first-team All-American ever. We are more proud of her than anybody may ever know," Kepler said.
