SALT LAKE CITY - Over the winter break, Utah swimming and diving has remained active on the international front. Five current student-athletes and two former Utes competed on three
separate continents in six different events.

Paul Ungur dominated the Romanian Nationals, setting a new national mark in the 50 back. The Ute senior also won the 50 fly and 100 back, while achieving another PR with a second-place finish in the 100 fly.
Ungur proceeded to compete in the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark and recorded the fourth-fastest time in the prelims of the 50 back. He then placed seventh overall, breaking his own Romanian national record.

Ungur is now ranked among the top 10 in the entire world and qualified for the 2018 World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China.Â
Ungur also set a new Romanian mark in the 50 fly (23.20), finished
13th in the 100 back and was 35th in the 50 free with a pair of personal bests.
Meanwhile, former Utes
Stina Colleou (Norway) and
Kristian Kron (Sweden) were also in action at the European Nationals representing their countries. Colleou set new personal marks in the 200 breast (
23rd, 2:26.34) and 50 breast (
48th, 32.37) while Kron finished
15th in the 200 back and set a new PR in the 100 back (53.62).
Another current Ute, David
Fridlander, was competing at the Israeli Nationals. He finished 5th in the 100 back with a time of 54.00 seconds.
At the Brazilian Nationals, Rodolfo
Moreira won the 50 free with a new PR of 22.86. He also placed seventh in the 100 free.

Fernando Cervantes impressed at the Mexican Nationals, with a new PR in the 50 free (23.57). He was also part of a second-place 400 free relay and third-place 200 free relay team.
Here in the United States, Parker
McOmber, a native of Guatemala and
Ecuador, swam at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals in Iowa City. He finished in the top 20 of the 200 back (1:48.72) and 100 back (49.37), both PR times for the freshman.
