SALT LAKE CITY – In the 2018-19 home opener, Utah Women's Swimming put up a valiant fight but fell to No. 11 USC 142-120, despite opening the meet with a new pool record.
"I would have loved to win this meet and I think we had some opportunities," head coach
Joe Dykstra said. "We were a couple tenths-of-a-second here and there from getting some wins in events.
I am really encouraged with the way everyone competed today and trained throughout the week. We had our most difficult week of practice and we do have some key pieces missing through injury and illness. We had a great attitude and the whole team put forth a tremendous effort."
It was a strong start for the Utes as they won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.96 with a team of
Emma Lawless,
Mariah Gassaway,
Aryanna Fernandes and
Gillian St. John.
"We started today with a new pool record in the relay event and that's really impressive seeing as how two of the individuals competing were freshmen who just got into the water for us," Dysktra stated.
Sophomore
Sara McClendon got the team off to a 2-for-2 start, swimming the 1000 free in 10:20.12 to capture the first individual event of the meet. Later in the day, she finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.49.
Freshman
Audrey Reimer made her presence felt by winning the 100 back in 56.52 with
Emma Broome placing second.
After four wins in a row for the Trojans, Utah responded in consecutive events. Again, it was Reimer impressing with a time of 2:01.78 in the 200 back, finishing just ahead of teammate
Mallori Allen.
Genny Robertson put forth a strong showing in the 200 breast (2:16.98) to garner more points for the Utes.
Senior captain
Darby Wayner went second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.46 and her classmate, St. John, was the runner-up in the 50 free at 23.79.
Fernandes, another freshman that has impressed early, placed second in the 100 fly (55.25) and 200 IM (2:05.36).
The Utah women are back in the pool next Saturday when it hosts UCLA at 11 a.m.
