PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Utah men's golf team opened action at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Monday and will head into Tuesday's play in 10th place following the first round of competition at the Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The Utes recorded a team score of 9-over par (293) in the opening round to finish the day in 10th place on the par-71, 6,945-yard course.
"Today wasn't the start we were hoping for," said Ute head coach Garrett Clegg. "Nobody felt like they played well, but the good news is, we have a lot of golf remaining. Fortunately, we are not far from a lot of teams. A good round for us tomorrow can go a long way."
Pacing the 18-team field on Monday was BYU after carding 13-under par (271). Pepperdine (-3) follows BYU in second place, Arizona (-2) is in third place, Colorado State (E) is fourth overall, while San Francisco (+1) rounded out the top-five teams on the first day of play.
Oregon State (+2), Saint Mary's (+2), Southern California (+6), and Oregon (+7) sit just ahead of Utah in the standings.
Leading the Utes to open the event were senior Kyler Dunkle and junior Jordan Costello. Dunkle and Costello shot rounds of even par (71) to lead Utah's five-man team. The pair of upperclassmen will head into Tuesday's second round tied for 13th place.
Junior Mitchell Schow carded 4-over par (75) in the opening round to sit tied for 57th place, while sophomore Blake Tomlinson finished the day tied for 69th place after recording a first-round score of 5-over par (76). Freshman Axel Einarsson shot 7-over par (78) on Monday and will head into the second round of play tied for 88th place.
Competing as an individual in the event, redshirt freshman Colton Tanner notched 5-over par (76) and is tied in 69th place.
Tuesday's second round of play will begin at 7:30 a.m. PT with tee times off the No. 1 and 10 tees. Live scoring for the entire event can be found at GolfStat.com.
