SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah ski team looks to defend its 2017 NCAA Championship in Steamboat Springs, Colo., on March 7-10. The Utes are one of eight teams that have qualified a full team of 12 skiers.
Martin Bergström, who is the defending NCAA champion in both classic and freestyle, was the top overall West qualifier in men's Nordic. He leads the league with four wins this year and is tied for the league lead with eight podium finishes. Håkon Hjelstuen makes his second NCAA appearance, with his first coming as a skier at Michigan Tech in 2015 when he competed while sick at the championships. Hjelstuen has two wins this season and three podium finishes, all in races of 20-km or longer. Bjørn Riksaasen makes his first NCAA appearance in his first season at Utah, he has two top-five and eight top-10 finishes this year for the Utes.
In women's Nordic, Guro Jordheim is also the top overall qualifier. A two-time All-American in her first season last year, she is currently on a five-race win streak and has won a league-high seven races this year and finished on the podium 10 times. Leah Lange makes her first NCAA appearance after serving as an alternate last year. Lange recently had her first career podium finish in the 5-km classic at the RMISA Championships and she has four top-10 finishes on the year. Mariah Bredal is also making her first NCAA appearance in her first year at Utah, she has seven top-10 finishes with her best finish of sixth done three times this year.
In women's alpine, Ann-Kathrin Breuning gets her first shot at the NCAA Championships in her first season at Utah after skiing for a non-NCAA school the previous three seasons. Breuning has seven top-five and two podium finishes this year. 2016 NCAA slalom champion and two-time All-American Julie Mohagen makes her third career NCAA appearance, she has five top-10 finishes this year. Sabine Krautgasser also served as an NCAA alternate last season.
For men's alpine, Sam Dupratt earned All-America honors last year in the men's giant slalom at the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish. He has two podium finishes this year. Freshman Linus Walch has finished in the top six four times. Freshman Huston Philp earned four top-10 finishes on the year.
