TORRANCE, Calif.– Senior
Jessica Sams led the Utah track and field team at day two of the Mt. SAC relays with a fourth-place finish in the 5,000-meter race.
Sams competed in the Open-A race where she finished with a time of 16.14.44. With this time, Sams recorded a new personal best and moved herself into fourth place all-time at Utah in the event.
"It was a career defining race," Utah head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "She really ran like you would expect a fifth-year senior to run. She had a ton of poise and a ton of confidence and I'm just really proud of her."
Competing in the 5,000-meter Open-B race was freshman
Aubrey Argyle and redshirt freshman
Trina Moreno. Argyle placed 15th with a time of 17:01.30 while Moreno finished in 21st with a time of 17:19.15. With these times, both Argyle and Moreno recorded new personal bests.
Sophomore
Sarah Newton led the Utes in the 800-meter race finishing in fourth place with a time of 2:08.06. This time moves Newton into eighth place all-time at Utah. Senior
Grace Englund and junior Cailtin Faust also competed finishing in ninth place with a time of 2:09.94 (Englund) and 14th with a time of 2:10.97 (Faust). Newton and Englund set new personal records.
The Utes had a strong showing in the 1,500-meter race with all three competitors placing in the top-15. Senior
Hannah McInturff led the way finishing in ninth place with a time of 4:31.10. Senior Megan Perkins-Killian finished in 11th with a time of 4:33.42 while sophomore
Nicole Griffiths placed 14th with a time of 4:34.24. Perkins-Killian and Griffiths recorded new personal bests.
Moving to the sprints, senior
Alissa Atisme competed in the 200-meter dash where she placed 30th with a time of 24.72. This time moves Atisme into fourth place all-time at Utah. Senior Raynee Helm Wheelock competed in the 100-meter dash finishing in 41st with a time of 12.42 and freshman
Jackie Martin competed in the 400-meter race placing 45th with a time of 57.70.
In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman
Rachel Whipple led the Utes finishing in 32nd with a time of 1:03.82. Senior
Madison Lanford placed 34th with a time of 1:04.51, freshman
Ruby Jane Mathewson finished in 35th with a time of 1:04.69, and sophomore
Brooke Martin placed 38th with a time of 1:10.03.
Junior
Eliza Hansen competed in the high jump Friday placing ninth with a jumping height of 5'2.25" (1.58 meters).
"It's been very productive with outstanding performances here at Mt. SAC and we will see if we can follow it up tomorrow at Long Beach," Kepler said.
The Utes will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Long Beach State Invitational.
