Utes Drop Season-Opening Matches in Hawaii

Utah goes 0-3 in first day of competition at Queen's Cup
HONOLULU – The Utah beach volleyball team opened its 2018 season going 0-3 in matches played during the opening day of the Hawaii Queen's Cup, which is being held at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

Utah dropped its opening match of the day, 5-0, to No. 3-ranked Hawaii and later fell to Washington, 5-0. The Utes wrapped up play against No. 16-rankded Loyola Marymount, falling 3-2 to the Lions.

Utah's No. 1 pairing of Adora Anae and Dani Barton fell in the opener to Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht (19-21, 25-23, 15-17), while the No. 2 duo of Melissa Powell and Tawnee Luafalemana dropped its opening-set to Hawaii's Morgan Martin and Lea Monkhouse (17-21, 20-22). Utah's No. 3 pairing of Bailey Choy and Lauga Gauta fell to Carly Kan and Laurel Weaver (7-21, 10-21), while the No. 4 duo of Brianna Doehrmann and Kenzie Koerber fell to Ari Homayun and Amy Ozee (10-21, 11-21). Utah's No. 5 duo of Alexa Van Komen and Berkeley Oblad rounded out Utah's matches with a loss to Paige Dreeuws and Hannah Zalopany (17-21, 18-21).

In a loss to UW, Anae/Barton fell to Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner (17-21, 21-15, 12-15), while Powell/Luafalemana dropped its match to Destiny Julye and Courtney Schwan (17-21, 16-21). Doehrmann/Koeber fell to Carly Dehoog and Shayne McPherson (9-21, 18-21), while Choy/Gauta lost to Anna Crabtree and Natatlie Robinson (18-21, 14-21). Van Komen/Oblad rounded out the dual falling to Emma Calle and Kara Bajema (11-21, 13-21).

Against LMU, Anae/Barton defeated Savannah Slattery and McKayla Ferris (21-18, 24-26, 26-24), while Powell/Luafalemana fell to Sara Kovac and Jessie Prichard (15-21, 14-21). Doehrmann/Koerber fell to Emma Doud and Bozena Culo (16-21, 12-21), while the new No. 4 duo of Choy/Oblad defeated Kekai Whitford and Chloe Reinig (21-19, 21-13). The new No. 5 duo of Van Komen/Gauta fell to Kristen Castellanos and Cierra Simpson (12-21, 21-19, 16-18).

Semifinals, a third-place match and the championship match will be played at Queen's Beach on Sunday. Utah will face Hawaii in semifinal No. 2, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. HT/2 p.m. MT. The winner wo semifinal No. 2 will face the winner of semifinal No. 1 (LMU/UW) in the championship match (1 p.m. HT/5 p.m. MT). The losing team of semifinal No. 2 between Utah and Hawaii will face the losing team between LMU and UW in the third-place match, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. HT/3:30 p.m. MT.
