DES MOINES, Iowa – Utah All-American track and field student-athlete
Grayson Murphy finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2018 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Murphy was the top collegiate finisher in the field with a time of 9:54.16. She was in 12th place after the sixth lap before moving up four spots during the seventh lap to eighth before finishing seventh.
Â
"To finish seventh at the U.S. Championships for her first time here is really unbelievable," Utah head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "She just ran a great race and I'm super proud of her. The race was super fast, particularly the first three laps, and she just hung on and kept making the moves to stay in the race. She showed a little bit of tiredness with about four laps to go but she hung on and kept herself in it. As the race unfolded she never wavered and stayed tough. That's been her calling card the entire year. This is her sixth steeplechase race in 42 days, which is not how you plan it, and I'm at a loss for words with her toughness, knowing she's not at 100-percent physically. I couldn't be happier for her to end her career at Utah this way. She's just a really special athlete."

Murphy was a five-time All-American for the Utes. She finished sixth in the steeplechase at the 2018 NCAA Track and Field Championships.
