SALT LAKE CITY –
The Utah men's lacrosse team will open its inaugural season in 2019 hosting Vermont on Friday, Feb. 1. The Utes first schedule features six home games and five opponents that played in last year's NCAA Tournament.
Highlighting the schedule are contests at perineal lacrosse powers Duke (March 12) and Virginia (March 31). The Blue Devils finished second in the NCAA last year and have won three NCAA titles over the past 10 years. Virginia (alma mater of Utah assistant coach Adam Ghitelman
) ranked 11th
in last year's final coaches poll and has won five NCAA titles.
The Utes play a two-game swing with the other men's lacrosse teams west of the Mississippi, at Denver on Feb. 23 and Air Force on Feb. 24. Denver, the 2015 NCAA Championships, finished fourth in last year's coaches poll while Air Force has made three NCAA appearances over the last five years.
Utah also faces assistant coach Will Manny
's alma mater, playing at Massachusetts on March 17th
. UMass finished 20th
in last year's coaches poll and played in the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to Vermont, which finished the year receiving votes in last year's polls, the Utes will host Mercer (Feb. 9), Bellarmine (March 9), Mount St. Mary's (April 6), Cleveland State (April 20) and Detroit Mercy (April 27). Other road games include Hofstra (Feb. 16), Furman (April 3), Fairfield (March 15) and Hartford (April 13). Hofstra has made 17 NCAA Tournament appearances in its history.
The Utes will play UMBC in a fall scrimmage at Tierney Field in Baltimore, Md., on Oct. 20. Utah will also host Marquette in a spring exhibition on Jan. 26.
