"I was really pleased," head coach
Brian Holman said. "Watching the film, I thought the kids did a really good job with the things that we were looking for. I thought our communication level was better than it's been, I thought we fought hard on ground balls, which we've been talking about, and I was really happy with the older guys, who played pretty well. I'm really proud of them for taking the lead on this. I think the biggest thing for me was that I thought our guys had a lot of fun. I thought they played with a lot of passion and emotion. They were playing against each other but also for each other and I was really proud of that because that's one of our program pillars. I was happy to see them be happy playing the game we love, so it was a good day."
With classes out for fall break, the Utes will start the week with a two-day team retreat with the goal to continue growing as a team.
"As I've told the guys, lacrosse is the greatest team sport there is and typically the great teams do well in every sport, but especially in our sport," Holman said. "We want to continue to build that camaraderie. No school, no lacrosse and as coaches we want to continue to foster our relationships with our players in a different setting. We have hikes planned, basketball, group exercises, downtime, great food – just spending two days with each other. I know the staff is looking forward to it and I think the guys are too."
Utah will host Utah Valley, BYU and Westminster for The Great Pumpkin Shootout.
Tournament Schedule
1:00 p.m. – Utah vs. Utah Valley; Westminster vs. BYU
2:15 p.m. – Utah vs. Westminster; BYU vs. Utah Valley
3:30 p.m. – BYU vs. Utah; Westminster vs. Utah Valley
All Utah games will be held at Ute Field with the non-Utah game on Crimson Field. Bleacher seating is available at Ute Field and we encourage fans to bring blankets and/or chairs for seating at Crimson Field. The Ute and Crimson Fields are located west of the McCarthey Track and Dumke Softball Stadium off South Wasatch Drive. Food trucks will be available.
"This will be the end of phase one for us and we just want to continue the process," Holman said. "I'm excited to have Utah Valley, BYU and Westminster here. Our roots are our club program, and we won't forget that, and we want to honor those teams by the way we play. I'm excited to go out and compete against them, but the more important thing for us is getting better. We get to face another team and all be on the same sideline. I know our guys will be excited and I think it's going to be a lot of fun."
