Former University of Utah track and field athlete Blaine Lindgren died of natural causes on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Payson, Utah surrounded by loved ones. Lindgren was 80 years old when he passed.
Lindgren played on the Utah football team for one year before turning his attention to the track team full-time and pursuing a future in the sport. The Chesterfield, Utah native finished third in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1961 NCAA Championships and was a two-time All-American while at Utah. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1962. Lindgren was a two-sport athlete, football and track and field, at Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah before attending Utah.
Following his collegiate career, Lindgren competed for the United States internationally for six summers in the 110-meter hurdles. In 1963, Lindgren won the gold medal at the Pan Am Games in São Paulo, Brazil, when he clocked a time of 13.8 seconds, a new record. Lindgren went on to represent Team USA at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics where he was a silver medalist. Lindgren finished in second place with a time of 13.74 seconds, which was just .07 shy of tabbing the gold.
Once he retired from competing, Lindgren worked in the banking industry and held positions at First Security Bank and Zions Bank until he retired in 2006. He managed to stay connected in the sports world, serving as a member of local and national sports committees and organizations, including the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation. He also was a referee for high school and college football for over 35 years.Â
Lindgren received many honors and was inducted to several hall of fames, some of which include: Cyprus High School, West Valley City (1990), Utah Summer Games (1991), Crimson Club Hall of Fame (2006), and was named #10 in The 50 Greatest Sports Figures From Utah by Sports Illustrated.
He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest track athletes to compete at Utah for his achievements both collegiately and professionally.
Lindgren is survived by his wife Maiva, Five children: Daris (Kim), Lex (Marrena), Maquel (Mike) Houlihan, Kaice (Eric) Jeffs, Kimberly Dobson, Eight grandchildren, Seven step-grandchildren and Two step-great grandchildren. Â
