ATLANTA - Utah Swim & Dive wrapped up the first night of the Georgia Tech Invite with 24 Utes competing in the evening's finals. The men rank third in the team standings, while the women are currently eighth.
"We had a very solid first day with a bunch of PR's and a few top-10 times," head coach
Joe Dykstra said. "Unfortunately, we had a costly disqualification during the relays and some mistakes put us in a hole as far as the women's standings are concerned. Meanwhile, the men are in the thick of it."
Rahiti De Vos finished fourth in the 500 free with a NCAA "B" time of 4:21.06.
Tyler Klawiter did the same, winning the "B" final with the sixth-fastest time in Utah history (4:23.67).
Cole Giandinoto,
Robert King and
Brody Lewis also took part in the "B" finals for the Utes.
The 50 free was another successful event for the men with
Cooper DeRyk swimming the eighth-fastest time in Utah history to place fourth (19.72).
Liam O'Haimhirgin joined him with a NCAA "B" time of 19.91, taking eighth overall.
Felix Chiun and
David Fridlander both participated in the "C" finals.
The 200 IM featured the most Utah competitors with six swimmers in action.
Jaek Horner recorded the eight-fastest time in Utah history with a 1:48.22 to place sixth.
Ben Waterman joined him in the main final after a great prelim swim of 1:48.05, the sixth-fastest time in Utah history.
Andrew Britton and
Jackson Cunningham were in the "B" final, while
Lex Hernandez-Nietling won the "C" final, participating along with
Chris Allen.
On the boards,
Tony Chen had an excellent showing in the 3m, improving from fifth in the prelims to second overall with a score of 365.25. As for the relays, DeRyk, O'Haimhirgin, Fridlander and Chiun took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:18.27. Fridlander, Britton, Watterman and O'Haimhirgin finished fourth in 3:10.41.
For the women,
Lizzy DeCecco was fourth in the 1m dive, moving up from 10
th in the prelims.
Sarah Lott,
Charity Pittard,
Emma Lawless and
Leyre Casarin finished fifth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:41.21
Sara McClendon had Utah's best result in the 500 free, taking 10
th overall, with
Mandy Gebhart placing 18
th. In the 200 IM, Pittard swam the eighth-fastest time in Ute history, 2:01.28 while
Rebecca Zeiger and
Christina Pick both qualified for the "C" finals. Casarin paced the Utes in the 50 free, making the "B" final with a time of 23.11
