LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Utah women's tennis team opened day one of competition at the UNLV Invitational on Friday, where the Utes picked up two wins in both singles and doubles. With these wins, the Utes will advance in their respective brackets and move on to the semifinal round of singles and doubles at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The day started with the quarterfinal round of doubles kicking off at 10 a.m. PT in each of the flights. Getting a huge win for the Utes knocking off the nations No. 17-ranked doubles team,
Katya Hersh and
Anya Lamoreaux matched up against Sabina Machalova and Alexa Bortles from Ole Miss. Hersh and Lamoreaux came out on top in a close match with a score of 8-6 to register the upset.
Utah's top doubles team of
Madison Tattini and
Whitney Hekking then followed with a win of their own, as they faced off against Arizona's Kirsten Prelle and Khim Iglupas. Tattini and Hekking notched an 8-6 victory. Both duos of Hersh/Lamoreaux and Tattini/Hekking, will advance in the flight one of doubles, and will compete in the semifinal round of doubles tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. PT.
Jasmine Rich and
Madison McKay competed for the Utes today in the second flight of doubles and took on Ky Ecton and Ellen Puzak from Colorado. Rich and McLay came up short, dropping the match 4-8. Rich and McKay will move to the consolation doubles bracket Saturday morning.
Later in the day with singles, Hersh carded a win in flight three, beating out Colorado's Tallulah Farrow. Hersh downed Tallulah with a score of 7-5, 6-2. Lamoreaux then followed with another victory in flight three, topping Connie Li from UNLV 6-1, 7-6. The two Utes had phenomenal days after beginning Friday with their doubles upset over the No. 17-ranked Ole Miss team, then by each winning their singles matches. Both Hersh and Lamoreaux will continue action tomorrow in the semifinal round of flight three.
Tattini represented Utah in flight one of singles and dropped her singles match against Tereza Janatova from Ole Miss. Tattini dropped the first set, 1-6, but then bounced back in the second and won the set 6-4 to push the match to a third set. Tattini couldn't get it done in the third and dropped the set, 4-6.
Hekking was paired up against Arizona's Khim Iglupas in flight two. Hekking also played a three-set match, where she too dropped the first set but caught momentum in the second set. Hekking went on to drop the match in the third set to her opponent from Arizona.
Emily Dush also saw action in flight two, taking on Georgia Tech's Gia Cohen. Dush dropped the match 6-1, 7-5.
The final Ute that saw singles action today was McKay, as she dropped her match against Madisen Olsen from Oregon, falling 3-6, 3-4. Tattini, Hekking, Dush, and McKay will compete in consolation singles matches tomorrow.
Play at the UNLV Invitational will continue Saturday morning for the Utes with the semifinal round of doubles beginning at 10 a.m. PT, followed by the semifinal round of singles, as well as the start of the consolation matches for singles and doubles.
