LA QUINTA, Calif. – Senior
Kyler Dunkle had a great opening round to lead the Utah men's golf team on Monday at the Prestige at PGA West. The Utes are tied for sixth place following the first day of action on the Greg Norman Course in La Quinta, Calif.
The Utes finished the day with a combined score of 7-over par (291) on the par-71, 7100-yard course. In the extremely competitive 16-team field, Utah is just 12 strokes back of the tournament leader, as well as No. 1-ranked team in the nation, Oklahoma State. Other than Oklahoma State shooting 6-under par, only one other team shot par or better on the day and that was No. 16 LSU, finishing with a first-round 5-under par.
Utah (+7) will head into Tuesday's second round within reach to climb the team leaderboard. UCLA (+2) is in third place, No. 14 Pepperdine (+5) is in fourth place, Oregon (+6) follows in fifth, while Stanford (+7) and Stanford 'B' (+7) are tied with the Utes in sixth place.
"Kyler got off to an incredible start!" said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Really, the team played solidly. Axel had a great round for us and was really solid. Tristan played well with the exception of one hole. Tomorrow we have a chance to reset and get ready to go. I think overall for us to climb the leaderboard tomorrow we will need to clean up our chipping. We left a few shots out there around the greens. Overall though, it was a good start to the tournament."
Dunkle continued his streak of rounds at par or better, marking his seventh straight on Monday. Dunkle opened the round by recording four birdies and an eagle through his first six holes to shoot 6-under on his first nine holes (back nine on the course). Dunkle finished the round with an 18-hole score of 3-under par (68) to go into the second round tied for second place overall.
Making his return to the line-up after playing as an individual in the spring opener, freshman
Axel Einarsson recorded a solid first-round score of even par (71) and is tied for 15
th place.
Sophomore
Tristan Mandur shot 4-over par (75) in the opening round and is tied for 42
nd place. Closing out Utah's team score, sophomore
Blake Tomlinson finished the first round with a score of 6-over par (77) and is tied for 56
th place. Junior
Mitchell Schow is tied for 75
th place after shooting 9-over (80) in the first round.
The second round of the Prestige at PGA West will begin Tuesday morning with Schow teeing off first for the Utes at 7:30 a.m. PT on the No.1 tee with the rest of the Utes to follow. Utah will be paired with golfers from Notre Dame and University of Stirling (Scotland). Golfweek will be providing a livestream of the tournament's second and final rounds. Viewers can tune in at
