BANDON, Ore. – After having a few weeks off from competition, the Utah men's golf team returned to action with a great opening round at the Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday. The Utes are in second place following the first round at the Bandon Dunes Resort in Bandon, Ore.
Utah's four scorers combined to post a score of 6-over par (294) on Sunday. Ohio State is in first place to lead the 17-team field and are just ahead of the Utes with a first-round score of 3-over par (291). San Jose State (+11) and No. 10-ranked SMU (+11) are tied for third place behind Utah, while four teams are tied for fifth place at 12-over par.
"We played well today," said Utah head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Conditions were extremely challenging. The wind was up at 20-25 mph and the course was playing really hard. I'm proud of how the guys hung in there throughout the day. Blake and Tristan had really good rounds for us. Hopefully today was a good confidence booster and we can come out tomorrow hungry. There is a lot of golf left and we need to understand that tomorrow is a new day that will present new challenges."
Sophomore
Blake Tomlinson led the Utes in the opening round and shot 2-under par (70) and was one of only two golfers in the field that finished the first round under par. Tomlinson is in second place and just one stroke back of the current tournament leader.
Sophomore
Tristan Mandur also had a great round for Utah, recording even par (72) on the day and is tied for third place following the first round of action. Mandur recorded four bogeys in the round, but was able to counter by also sinking four birdies.
Freshman
Axel Einarsson finished the round with an 18-hole score of 3-over par (75). Einarsson is currently tied for 22
nd overall. Rounding out the team score for the first round, senior
Kyler Dunkle shot 5-over par (77) and is in a tie for 45
th place.
Junior
Mitchell Schow is in 107
th place following his first-round 18-over par (90). Playing as an individual on the Bandon Dunes Course, junior
Jordan Costello is also tied for 45
th overall with his round of 5-over par (77).
Utah ranked second on par-4 scoring average on the day in the 17-team field with an average score of 4.10 (+5). Tomlinson was third on the day on par-4 scoring average at 3.80 (-2), while Mandur ranked seventh at 4.00 (E). Utah also tied for most pars recorded in the first round with 55.
The second round of the Bandon Dunes Championship is set to get underway Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. PT. The golfers will begin the round in a shotgun start format. Live scoring is available via
