PROVO –In a nail-biting match, the 44th ranked University of Utah women's tennis team was able to come away with a victory against BYU in the Deseret First Duel. With this win, the Utes are now 10-3 overall on the season, and have taken the title of the Deseret First Duel for the 10th straight year against the Cougars.
"Today was a total team effort, and I can't say enough about Leah Heimuli's performance with the whole match on the line," said head coach Mat Iandolo.
Unable to earn the doubles point, the Utes were down early as BYU was able to take the lead into singles. Utah was able to record one doubles win on court No. 2, as Whitney Hekking and Leah Heimuli were able to top Polina Malykh and Madeline Almeida with a score of 6-4.
Down 0-1 to start off singles, Madison Tattini was able to even the score with a win at the No. 2 spot, as she was able to coast past Kate Cusick 6-3, 6-2. Lindsay Hung was then able to put the Utes up 2-1 with a victory over Madeline Almeida at the No. 4 position, with a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Later in the match, with a win of her own on the No. 5 court, Hekking was able to tie things back up at 3-3 and put the Utes in a winning position, defeating Katie Fitt 6-7, 6-3, 6-1. To then seal the victory and complete the comeback for Utah, Heimuli was able to knock off Samantha Smith in a competitive match at the No. 6 positon, with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, to give the Utes the 4-3 victory.
The University of Utah women's tennis team will be back in action next week, as they will be making a road trip to continue Pac-12 conference play, with matches against Arizona and Arizona State. Their match with Arizona State is set to take place on Friday, March 22nd, in Tempe, Arizona, at 2:30 p.m. MT. Their second match with Arizona State will then take place on Saturday, March 23rd, at 1 p.m. MT in Tucson, Arizona.
