SALT LAKE CITY - After playing four games in a nine-day span during Utah's spring break, the Utes lacrosse team gets some much-deserved rest and recovery this week before facing Virginia on Sunday, March 31. The Hoos are ranked ninth in the latest coaches and
Inside Lacrosse polls.
"We're going to meet tomorrow as a staff and make plan for this week but the general consensus right now is recovery," head coach
Brian Holman said. "That's all part of our process, how do we recover. We will practice, but it will be focused on recovery and getting back in the weight room. Next week is going to be about getting better as a lacrosse team and players. We'll have a full week of practice before Virginia. The two weeks are going to look a little different. We also want to continue getting these guys back into a routine after spring break and making sure school is taken care of."
Lax Sports Network figured out that the Utes traveled over 4,400 miles during their eight-day road trip.
While the Utes went 0-3 during the week away from home, Holman believes the road trip was another step towards helping the team learn what it takes to be competitive at the national level.
"In of each one of those games we learned something really cool about ourselves," Holman said. "Coming out of the Duke game we learned that if we prepare and we work hard and we're diligent and we're nervous and scared, we can play some good lacrosse. Out of the Fairfield game, we learned that if we think that we're just a little better than we are and we're not as nervous, we can let a game slip away. For us and for any team, winning games at this level is hard to come by. I thought that was a game we should have won and that's my fault. I don't think I had the team as mentally prepared as they needed to be to win that game. That's a learning lesson in coaching for me. Even though I've been around a long time, it's my first year, but that's no excuse. I tell those guys that I'm learning along the way too. That's what's fun about all this. The guys were really upset after that, we had a great film session on Saturday morning, we learned a ton from that game. Probably more than any of the other games. That's the way we do it – we learn, we regroup, we move on. We had a great trip up to UMass. The bus ride was awesome and we went out and faced a team that's really good, and we didn't have much to offer them, and we learned that it's really hard to prepare for a team in one day, and especially if you don't have the depth that is required to play that kind of schedule. Lesson learned, mission accomplished, and now we're home.
"I also think the staff did an awesome job," Holman continued. "It's not easy to prepare for a lot of games in a short period of time. You think about the scouting reports that have to be done, the film work that has to be done, the team meetings that have to be organized – kudos to our coaching staff. They were on top of it. That bodes well for the future. If you want to be a national contender and get into the playoffs, you have to be able to turn things around quickly. You have to be two steps ahead of the game and I thought this was a good trial run. I thought we were competing in that type of environment and I thought the staff was incredible."
