TUCSON, Ariz. – Led by freshman
Axel Einarsson's first top-20 finish of his career, the Utah men's golf team finished in 13
th place at the N.I.T after recording the team's best round of the event on the final day at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.
Utah's four scorers combined to post a final round score of 4-under par (284) in route to finish 13
th overall on the Catalina Course. The Utes finished with a two-day, 54-hole score of 4-over par (294-290-284=868).
Einarsson had his best event as a Ute and finished in a tie for 19
th place for his first top-20 finish of the year. Einarsson notched his third straight round under par for the event on Tuesday after shooting a final-round 2-under par (70). The freshman from Sweden finished the event with a combined score of 5-under par (71-70-70=211) which marked his season low 54-hole tournament score and first event finishing under par.
"Today was a better day for our team," said Ute head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Axel had a good tournament and really competed these last two days. Overall, it was a tough way to end our spring break trip. We are ready to get home and regroup. We have a lot to work on before we head to our next tournament."
Kyler Dunkle had his best round of the event and the low score for Utah today with a final round 3-under par (69). Dunkle finished the event 1-over par (73-75-69=217) to finish tied for 46
th place.
Also registering his best round of the event,
Blake Tomlinson went 1-under par (70) on the final day to finish tied for 55
th overall. Tomlinson carded a 54-hole score of 4-over par (75-74-71=220).
In his return to the lineup,
Jordan Costello finished tied for 66
th place after carding 4-over par (76) on the final day. Costello had a two-day score of 8-over par (75-73-76=224).
Tristan Mandur finished tied for 69
th overall with a combined score of 9-over par (78-73-74=225) and posted a final-round 2-over par (74).
No. 4-ranked Arizona State dominated the 16-team field and came out on top after combining for 50-under par (814). No. 7-ranked USC (-29) placed second, No. 5-ranked Oklahoma (-28) finished in third place, while Colorado State (-25) and Iowa State (-24) rounded out the top-five in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Two Utes wrapped up play as individuals in the Sonoran Showdown on the Sonoran Course at the OMNI Tucson National.
Peyton Hastings finished tied for 14
th place following his final round 3-over par (73). Hastings had a 54-hole score of 8-over par (70-75-73=218).
Mitchell Schow placed in a tie for 18
th overall following his final round score of 1-over par (71). Schow finished the event at 15-over par (70-84-71=225).
Utah golf will be back in action at the Redhawks Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2. The two-day event will be held at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.
