Utah Beach Volleyball Drops Season Opener Against No. 11 California

Drews and Luafalemana pick up win over Cal's No. 1 pair.
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Utah beach volleyball team fell to the No. 11-ranked California Golden Bears in the Utes' season opener Thursday afternoon. The Utes dropped the dual 4-1 at the Clark Kerr sand volleyball courts in Berkeley, Calif.

Dani Drews and Tawnee Luafalemana teamed up for the first time as the No. 1 pair for Utah and picked up the sole win against the Golden Bears. Drews and Luafalemana dropped the first set 21-17 to Cal's No. 1 pairing of Mima Mirkovic and Jordan Polo, but forced a third set after taking the second set, 21-17. The third set went back-and-forth until the very end when Drews and Luafalemana pulled away with the 15-13 third set victory.

Utah opened the day with the No. 3 and No. 4 pairs battling it out. Lauren Sproule and Phoebe Grace competed as the No. 3 pair, while Olivia Teerlink and Kinga Windisch saw action in the No. 4 slot for the Utes. Sproule and Grace struggled in the first set, but had a much closer second set before falling in extra points, 22-20. Teerlink and Windisch fell in straight sets to Cal's No. 4 pair.

At the No. 2 position, Kenzie Koerber and Megan Yett dropped a tough dual after losing the first set 24-22 and then playing in another tight set but ultimately falling 21-18 in the second set.
All the pairs for Utah on Thursday were competing together for the first time. Utah's returners from last season played with different partners last year, while Thursday's competition was the first appearance on the sand for Yett, Teerlink, and Windisch as members of the program.

Utah will turn their attention to the Saint Mary's College Tournament that begins tomorrow with a dual against San Francisco at 1 p.m. MT in Moraga, Calif. The Utes will then play tournament host, No. 20-ranked Saint Mary's at 4 p.m. MT to close out Friday's play.
