UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – The Utah men's golf team completed the first and second rounds of the Redhawk Invitational on Monday. Senior
Kyler Dunkle led the Utes on the first day and is tied for 15
th place heading into the final round at the Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.
Dunkle carded 1-over par (72) in the first round, but then turned around and notched 5-under (66) on the final 18 holes of the day after only registering one bogey in his second round. Dunkle sits tied for 15
th with his 36-hole score of 4-under par to lead the Utes.
Utah's four scorers began the event by recording 3-over par (287) as a team, while closing out the day with a second-round even par (284). The Utes' two-round score of 3-over par (571) puts the team in 16
th place in the 18-team field. However, Utah is just six strokes back of making its way into the top-half of the team standings and seven strokes back of the three teams tied in sixth place.
"It was good to see Kyler play better during the second round," said Utah head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Hopefully the rest of the guys can have a better day tomorrow and help our team score more. We need everyone to show up tomorrow. We really didn't drive the ball well on the par 5's and it hurt our ability to reach those holes in two shots. Hopefully we can play them better tomorrow!"
Junior
Jordan Costello and sophomore
Blake Tomlinson are tied for 58
th place with scores of 2-over par. Costello shot rounds of 1-over par (72), while Tomlinson went 1-under par (71) in the first round and then 2-over par (73) in the second round.
Rounding out Utah's line-up, freshman
Axel Einarsson and sophomore
Tristan Mandur are tied for 70
th overall. Einarsson and Mandur both have 36-hole scores of 4-over par heading into Tuesday's final round. Einarsson shot 1-over (72) and 3-over (74) on Monday, while Mandur carded rounds of 2-over par (73).
UCLA leads the 18-team field with a score of 31-under par. Fresno State (-27) is in second place, while Oregon State (-16) follows in third. Drexel (-14) and UT-Arlington (-9) are in fourth and fifth places, respectively, ahead of three teams tied for sixth place at 4-under par.
