PHOENIX – The Utah men's golf team completed the first two rounds of its regular season finale on Friday at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate. The Utes are in 14th place heading into the final day at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
In an extremely competitive field, Utah fell behind in the standings following a first-round 11-over par (295). The Utes weren't able to pick up enough pars and birdies to make a jump on the leaderboard to close out the day and finished the second round with a score of 7-over par (291), which gives Utah a combined score of 18-over par (586).
"Today was disappointing for our team," said Utah head coach Garrett Clegg. "Hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow like we did at Chambers Bay last tournament."
A duo of sophomores led Utah on Saturday with Blake Tomlinson and Tristan Mandur both posting two-round scores of 3-over par (145) to sit in a tie for 35th place. Tomlinson shot rounds of 3-over par (74) and even par (71), while Mandur fired rounds of 5-over par (76) and then Utah's best round of the day, 2-under par (69).
Senior Kyler Dunkle posted a first-round score of 2-over par (73) and went on to record 3-over par (74) in the second round. Dunkle is tied for 50th overall with a combined score of 5-over par (147).
Freshman Axel Einarsson and junior Jordan Costello rounded out the Utes, tied for 72nd place with two-round scores of 10-over par (152). Einarsson had rounds of 4-over par (75) and 6-over par (77), while Costello registered rounds of 2-over par (73) and 8-over par (79).
Tournament host, No. 2-ranked Arizona State, leads the elite field of 14 teams with a combined score of 13-under par (555). No. 7-ranked Texas (-4) is in second place, top-ranked Oklahoma State (-3) is in third place, No. 25-ranked Baylor (-2) is in fourth place, while UCLA (-1) and Arizona State 'B' (-1) are tied for fifth place.
Utah will close out the final round of the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate Saturday morning with tee times for the field beginning at 7 a.m. MST. Live scoring for the final round can be found via Golfstat.com.
