PHOENIX – Kyler Dunkle capped off the final day of the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate carding 3-under par (68) to lead the Utes on Saturday. Utah's team continued its struggles at the event and finished 14
th place at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix to close out the regular season.
Dunkle had his best round of the tournament on Saturday with his round of 68 and finished with a 54-hole score of 2-over par (215). Dunkle finished as the low-Ute and placed in a tie for 28
th. Dunkle finished tied for second in the field in par-3 scoring average with an average of 3.00 (E).
Utah's four scorers on Saturday combined for 7-over par (291) in the final round. The Utes finished the event at 25-over par (877).
"We need to show a lot more pride and heart when things aren't going our way," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Some of us do a good job battling, but not everyone. It's okay to not play your best, but it is never okay to not give your best effort. We have to get home and regroup. Let this settle in, and then get ready to go for Pac-12's."
Tristan Mandur carded 2-over par (73) in the final round to post a combined 5-over (218) for the event. Mandur tied for 41
st overall.
Blake Tomlinson tied for 51
st place after his final-round 5-over par (76). Tomlinson had a 54-hole score of 8-over par (221).
Jordan Costello finished tied for 67
th place with a combined score of 13-over par (226), while
Axel Einarsson finished tied for 71
st with a combined score of 15-over par (228). Costello had a final-round 3-over par (74) and Einarsson shot 5-over par (76) on the last day of the event.
Tournament host, No. 2-ranked Arizona State, won the event shooting 20-under par for the two-day tournament. No. 7-ranked Texas (-8) finished in second place in the 14-team field, UCLA (-7) followed in third, while top-ranked Oklahoma State (-2) and Arizona State 'B' (-2) tied for fourth place.
Utah will head to the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships on Monday, April 22. The three-day conference tournament will be held at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
