EUGENE, Ore – Senior
Kyler Dunkle and the Utah men's golf team capped off the Pac-12 Championship on Wednesday by recording the highest team and individual finishes since joining the Pac-12. Utah placed in a tie for fifth at the Eugene Country Club, while Dunkle came away with a second-place finish at the conference tournament.
Dunkle fell just short of claiming the conference title on Wednesday behind the No. 2-ranked player in the nation, California's Collin Morikawa. Dunkle shot 2-over par (73) in the final round to sit at 8-under par (276) for the event, but it wasn't enough to overcome Morikawa who finished the event at 12-under par, which included three straight birdies to end his final round 1-under (70). The second-place finish is the best finish by a Ute since joining the Pac-12.
This marked Dunkle's fourth top-five finish of the season and sixth of his career. Dunkle also has now posted 10 career top-10 finishes and now has sole possession of second place all-time in Utah history. His five top-10 finishes in a single season this year ties head coach
Garrett Clegg's mark he set during the 2003-04 season, along with Phil Holmes during the 1991-92 season, for the second-most in a single season with the school record being six top-10 finishes. Dunkle finished as the low-Ute in nine of the 12 events this year.
"Really thrilled for Kyler!" said Clegg. "He was amazing this week! He has definitely set the standard for our program. It was an extremely challenging day on the course. The winds were really strong and all of our guys were really great out there."
On a day where scores were highest they had been all tournament, Utah was able to remain in the mix to secure its best conference finish since joining the Pac-12 in the 2011-12 season. The Utes posted a final-round score of 17-over par (363) to jump one place on the final day and finish in a tie for fifth at 31-over par (1451). The fifth-place finish is the best placing at a conference tournament since Utah placed fifth at the Mountain West Championships in 2008.
"There were only four teams that had better rounds than us today," Clegg explained. "Overall, a great performance by the team. We hung tough every round and today was no different. We all know that we haven't played well historically at the Pac-12 Championships and so to play solid all week was a big deal for us. Overall, I am really thrilled for the team and for our program."
Sophomore
Tristan Mandur also had a great showing at the conference event and gave the Utes a huge boost. Mandur finished tied for 16
th place to record his fourth top-20 finish of the year. Mandur finished the event at 4-over par (288) after registering a final round of 4-over par.
Blake Tomlinson and
Mitchell Schow both turned in rounds of 3-over par (74) to contribute to the Utes' fifth place finish. Tomlinson and Schow tied for 43
rd place at the Pac-12 Championship with 72-hole scores of 12-over par (296).
Axel Einarsson completed his first action at the conference tournament by finishing tied for 46
th place with a score of 13-over par (297). Einarsson shot 5-over par (76) on Wednesday.
Rounding out the Utes in Eugene,
Jordan Costello finished in a tie for 63
rd overall with a score of 24-over par (308). Costello fired a round of 9-over par (80) to close out the event.
No-17-ranked Stanford shot the best round on Wednesday to win the conference title with a 72-hole score of 7-under par (1413). UCLA (E) finished in second place, No. 12-ranked California (+1) followed in third, while second-ranked Arizona State (+23) finished ahead of Utah in fourth place.
