SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah baseball clinched the series over Washington State with a 2-1 victory on Friday, May 17 at Smith's Ballpark.
In a game where hits were hard to come by, Utah produced two runs on three hits in the seventh inning to take a 2-1 lead and
Austin Moore and
Zac McCleve shut down the Cougars bats from there to seal the win and the series.
Rykker Tom led the Utes at the plate going 2-3 on the day.
Chandler Anderson and
Matt Richardson both came up with RBI to give Utah the lead late.
Washington State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on two hits.
Utah only had two hits up until the seventh inning when they came up with three to manufacture those two runs. Singles from
Chase Fernlund and
Briley Knight got the inning going and they both advanced bases on a wild pitch putting runners on second and third with one out. Anderson came through hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game. Richardson came up next and hit a single to right field to give Utah their first lead of the day.
The Utes pitching was strong all day.
Joshua Tedeschi got the start and went 3.2 innings only giving up one run on three hits. Moore came in and locked it down pitching five innings only allowing two hits to earn his first win of the season.
McCleve only needed two pitches to earn his second save in as many days and his fifth save of the season. Entering the game with a 3-1 count against a Washington State batter, McCleve threw two strikes to end the game and clinch the series for Utah.
The third game between the two teams is scheduled to be played Saturday, May 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Smith's Ballpark.
