MALIBU, Calif. – The No. 16 Utah volleyball team lost a five-set marathon rematch with Cal Poly (19-25, 25-17, 25-18, 14-25, 16-18) in Malibu, Califorina at the Pepperdine Asics Classic.
Utah had three match points in the fifth set, but Cal Poly held off the Utes, and the first time the Mustangs got a match point, they took advantage.
Dani Drews led the team with 26 kills hitting .286. She also had seven digs, three aces and three blocks.
After Cal Poly won the first set, Utah controlled the second and third sets to take the lead in the match. In the second set, the Utes took an early lead and held it throughout, but Cal Poly was hanging around until the end. Utah got on a roll late in the set winning the final six points to even things up.
The third set was close until the Utes went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-15 lead and didn't look back after that.
With Utah seeming to have the momentum, Cal Poly really jumped on the Utes in the fourth and then didn't slow down to push the match to a fifth set.
Neither team could get separation in the fifth. The Utes had three match points after a Drews ace and two
Berkeley Oblad kills, but couldn't get the decisive point to end the match. Cal Poly finally got their chance and took advantage of it, ending the match on a 3-0 run.
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres had 41 assists, while also having a career high 18 digs.
Berkeley Oblad was the other Ute with double-figure kills with 13. She hit .333 on the night.
Utah's record falls to 8-2 after this weekend. They have one match left in non-conference play against in-state rival No. 13 BYU in the Huntsman Center on Thursday, September 19. First serve is at 6 p.m.
