CORAL GABLES, Fla. –After a total of three hours in rain delays, the University of Utah women's tennis team has wrapped up their first day of tournament play at the Miami Fall Invite. The first day of competition consisted of one of round doubles action, as well as two rounds of singles play.
For the quarter finals in doubles, in the Orange Flight, the No. 55 ranked duo of
Whitney Hekking and
Madison Tattini were able to defeat Julia Fischand and Sara Kelly of Florida Gulf Coast University, with a score of 6-3. To then finish things up in the for the Utes in the Green Flight,
Emily Dush and
Madeline Lamoreaux defeated Georgia State's Alba Retortillo and LSU's Luba Vasilyuk. Dush and Lamoreaux took an early 3-1 lead, but the duo of Retortillo and Vasilyuk were able to come back to tie it at 3-3, going back-and-forth until Utah took the win, 7-5. Both University of Utah doubles teams will advance to the semi-Finals, with play continuing tomorrow morning.
In the Round of 16 singles, Hekking and Lamoreaux were able to pick up wins to in the Green Flight to advance to the quarter finals. Hekking recorded a dominant performance against Denisa Gheorge from Georgia State, as she came away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. In her first win as a Ute,
Madeline Lamoreaux was able to knock off Florida Atlantic's Harris Caldwell, with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
In the Orange Flight of singles,
Madison Tattini fell against Georgia State's Damira Muminovic. Tattini was able to come away with the first set, 6-3, but after a two-hour rain delay, Muminovic mounted a comeback to win, 6-4, 6-1. Tattini then competed in the consolation quarter finals, as she was able to overcome Georgia State's Aleksandra Stromova with a 6-2, 6-0 win, advancing to the consolation semi-finals.
Hekking then matched up against LSU's Anna Loughlan in the quarter finals of singles and fell short to Loughlan in the third set. Hekking went up early with a 6-2 win in the first set, but Loughlan was able to rally back to win the next two sets, 6-1, 1-0 (13-11), to defeat Hekking.
Lamoreaux's quarter final match was cut short by yet another downpour of rain, as she faced off against Georgia State's Andreea Stanescu. Lamoreaux was able to come away with the first set, 6-4, but then play was cut short during the second set, as she trailed Stanescu, 1-3. This quarter finals match will resume after the completion of tomorrow's round of doubles play.
The Miami Fall Invite will continue tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. ET, with the semi-final round of doubles and singles, along with the conclusion of Lamoreaux's quarter final match and the consolation semi-final round. Live stats for tomorrow's action can be found
