SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball program's third quarter rally fell short against the No. 11 Arizona Wildcats, falling 85-69. The Utes are 12-14 overall and 5-10 in Pac-12 play.
Arizona led by as many as 17 points early in the third quarter, but the Utes fought back to make it a seven-point game to start the fourth. Utah went on an 8-0 run late in the third that included five points from freshman
Brynna Maxwell, making it a nine-point game with 3:51 left to play in the period.
Maxwell would go on to knock down a key three-pointer with 9:11 on the clock in the fourth quarter, part of a 7-0 run that started at the end of the third, making it 62-55 with some offensive momentum behind them.
Unfortunately for Utah, the Wildcats would go on a 13-0 run to make it 80-60 with under five minutes to go on the game, pulling away for good. The Utes finished the game shooting 40-percent from the floor and 50-percent from the three, knocking down 10 three-pointers.
LEADERS
Maxwell led the Utes with 22 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the arc, also shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She added a career-high five assists while also grabbing four rebounds and a steal.
Dru Gylten finished the game with 16 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the floor, 2-of-3 from the three-point line and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. She also recorded four assists and three steals for the night.
STANDOUT STAT
Maxwell entered the game with 65 total three-pointers this season and with her five tonight, she has 70, leading the Pac-12 in three-pointers made. She is now just eight threes away from cracking the top-five all-time at Utah in single-season threes with three regular season games remaining.
Kalee Whipple (2006-10) currently ranks fifth all-time in program history in single-season threes made, knocking down 77 in 2008-09.
NOTABLE
- Sophomore Dru Gylten scored 16 points in tonight's game against the Wildcats, her second-straight game in double-digits after putting up 21 points against California. She has four double-digit games this season and 13 in her career.
- Freshman Brynna Maxwell knocked down five three-pointers tonight, one shy of her career-high of six set against UTSA and Colorado. She has hit two-or-more threes in 21 games this season.
- Maxwell put up 22 points against the Wildcats tonight, her fifth 20-point game this season.
- Utah knocked down 10 threes against Arizona, the eighth time this season that the Utes have hit double-digit threes, giving them 217 total this year. Utah is 23 three-pointers away from setting the single-season record for team threes made, passing the record that was set last season (239).
