PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 44-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team dropped a match to the No. 39-ranked Washington State Cougars on Sunday afternoon, falling 0-5 to close out the weekend. The Utes moved to 10-5 this season following the road trip to the Pacific Northwest to open Pac-12 play.
"This weekend was certainly not the standard that we have been holding ourselves to for the majority of the year," said head coach
Ric Mortera. "We are looking forward to tackling the challenges we are currently facing head on and having a great week of practice leading up to next week's matches."
Starting the day off with doubles, the Utes fell behind early on all courts. Utah's top duo of
Whitney Hekking and
Madison Tattini closed the gap in their match, but Washington State pulled ahead on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts to gain the 1-0 lead.
In singles, Utah fell behind on every court in the first set at positions 1-4. The second sets for Utah were much tighter across the board, but the Cougars were able to pull out wins at every spot to clinch the match.
Madeline Lamoreaux and
Emily Dush dropped second sets 6-4 on their respective courts to set the Utes back 3-0, while Tattini and Hekking battled out their second sets and ultimately fell in tiebreakers to end the match.
The Utes are set to return to the Eccles Tennis Center next Friday, March 13
for the team's first conference home match. Utah will host Arizona at 2:30 p.m. MT on Friday and then will wrap up the weekend with a match against Arizona State on Sunday, March 15 at 11 a.m. MT.
