SALT LAKE CITY – The long awaited return to campus for voluntary workouts at the University of Utah began this Monday, June 15, as athletics facilities reopened for student-athletes from football, men's and women's basketball, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball as part of the comprehensive phased approach.
Â
"I'm thankful for the outstanding members of our staff who have worked tirelessly to create a safe and productive environment to begin the return to campus process," said
Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics. "Thank you, also, to our student-athletes, who have been so patient. The many months away from each other makes the days ahead special."
Â
As many as 90 student-athletes comprise the Phase I group from the aforementioned six sport programs who have resided within 100 miles of campus since March. As part of Phase I, those student-athletes wishing to take part in voluntary in-person workouts began the reporting process Wednesday, June 10, with annual physical exams in addition to both PCR COVID-19 and antibody testing.
Â
Safety protocols and measures to ensure a safe and compliant atmosphere for the student-athletes and staff upon their return include:
Â
· Daily temperature checks, wristbands and face coverings
· Student-athletes will be escorted to and from training facilities as well as within all facilities
· Student-athletes must be cleared to work out and listed on a roster at the check-in points with specified report times. Those who fail to report at the correct time or not cleared will NOT be granted access to facilities
Â
Procedures and protocols on the handling of positive tests of student-athletes and staff were also reiterated and centered on the goals of creating safe and manageable return groups of student-athletes and staff, decentralizing potential areas of congestion and cross-contamination amongst teams and student-athletes and creating a contact tracing system within the department.
Â
To help prevent the crossover between the different sports returning, the Sorenson High Performance Center will remain closed while satellite weight rooms were established for each sport program participating in voluntary workouts.
Â
Football:Â Reduced capacity in the weight room at the Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Center
Men's Basketball:Â College of Health PEAK weight room
Women's Basketball:Â Huntsman Basketball Facility (practice gym balcony)
Gymnastics:Â Dumke Gymnastics Center
Soccer:Â Concourse of Ute Field
Volleyball:Â Crimson Court
Â
"We are excited to welcome the first phase of student-athletes returning for voluntary workouts," said Deputy Athletics Director
Kyle Brennan, who led the committee that planned and organized the phased return. "The athletic training staff, sports performance team, facilities staff and committee have worked tirelessly these past few weeks to ensure that we're able to provide a comprehensive and safe environment for our student-athletes. In addition, we're hopeful that the education and protocol we've provided for those returning as part of Phase I will create a culture of compliance moving forward into the fall."
Â
The success within each phase will continue to guide the approach to subsequent phases, as greater numbers of student-athletes will be welcomed back to campus in the safest possible manner.
