Bjorn Brudevoll joined Utah's alpine ski team after being a member of the 2019-20 Norwegian National Team (C status), and on the national European Cup team for two seasons (2017-19).
Below he answered a few questions so Utah fans can get to know him a little better as he gets ready for his first season.
When did you start skiing?
First time I started to ski is when I was two years old.
What do you remember from it when you were really young?
I don't remember that much since I was two, but had these super tiny skies that are the about the size of my feet right now. I remember a little later just skiing with my dad and going on skiing vacations. I loved the speed of it and it was super fun to do.
Was it a family thing growing up?
It was always a family thing. We would always go skiing on the holidays.
What do you love the most about skiing?
There are so many aspects of skiing that I really love. One of the cool things is the skiing community is really nice. Everyone is good friends even though we're all competitors. Some of my best friends are my competitors. I feel like that's really rare for how sports usually are. I also really love to compete. The feeling I get at the starting gate is incredible.
When did you know you wanted to ski in college?
I was on the national team in Norway the last three years, but the federation usually doesn't have a ton of money unfortunately. I got injured and was out a couple months. I wanted a second option other than the national team and called a friend of mine and got connected with JJ and had interest in Utah.
How is it skiing for your country?
It's really cool actually. You get a sense of pride when you do that. Normally, when you're competing you just ski for your ski club but as you get better and start skiing in the European Cup or World Cup and it says Norway on you ski bib is really something to be proud of.
What made you want to ski at Utah?
I know quite a few guys on the ski team before so I knew the team is a bunch of really good, hard working guys. Also, if you look at the results the last couple of years they have done really well. Since I know a few of them and since they started here, we talked about the workouts, coaches, facilities and stuff like that and for me it was never a doubt that Utah was the best college for me. It's really best college if you want to keep getting better.
What are your goals here?
My goals are to do well in the NCAA Cup in slalom. For me especially with slalom because I've mainly been skiing slalom the last couple of years. I have a goal of winning the slalom cup at the world cup and in the NCAA Cup.
