SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah lacrosse team heads into the bye week with an 18-5 throttling of local foe Westminster Saturday afternoon on Crimson Field and set a new program record for goals in a game, surpassing the previous high of 17 against Furman last season.
Â
The Griffins got on the board first, scoring at the 10:32 mark in the first, but Utah (2-4) answered with a quick 3-0 run of its own – including back-to-back goals from
Jared Andreala and
Cole Brams within eight seconds of one another. Both teams scored once more to make it 4-2 in favor of the Utes through one quarter of play.
Â
However, that was as close as Westminster got with Utah scoring 12-straight goals that spanned from the 3:27 mark in the first frame to the 13:15 mark in the fourth quarter. The Griffins were able to tack on three more goals in the first half of the fourth frame to make it 15-5 but Utah responded with three more of its own to make it an 18-5 game heading into the final 1:38 of play before the horn blew to end the game.
Â
With Utah in firm control of the game, the Utes were able to unload their bench and get everyone available reps on the field – including all four keepers.
Connor Hollison made his collegiate debut in the fourth with 6:19 and recorded one save while allowing none in 4:41 minutes of action.
Bryce Cheek also made his debut, closing out the final 1:38 for Utah to go with a save.
Â
The #RoadWarriors will now get a week off to regroup before heading off to Macon, Ga., for a battle against Mercer on Saturday, March 27, at 9 a.m. (MT). Mercer was Utah's first victory as a Division I program back in 2019, a 13-9 victory for the Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
