FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Utah diving team continued its stellar season on Monday at the NCAA Zone E Championships, advancing
Lizzy DeCecco and
Emma Ruchala, along with
Tony Chen to the NCAA Championships.
"We continued our historic season and qualified two women divers for the first time in school history," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "This competition is an absolute meat grinder and is terribly difficult to navigate, so I am incredibly proud of our efforts today and we have some great opportunities to qualify more men and women in the next two days."
DeCecco and Ruchala became the first pair of Ute women to advance after phenomenal showings on the 1-meter event. DeCecco placed seventh in the prelims,
Lexi Mills placed eighth, while Ruchala finished right at the cut off line in the prelims to have three Utes advance to the finals.
Running concurrently was the men's 3-meter dives where Utah also had three advance with Chen finishing seventh in the prelims,
Luke McDivitt placing eighth and
Chase Hindmarsh also advancing.
In the finals for the women, DeCecco placed ninth overall with a score of 530.55 to earn her berth to the NCAA Championships, while Ruchala tallied a 12th place finish with a score of 521.30 to earn Utah's second bid. Just missing the cut was Mills, who placed 14th, but will have a chance to qualify in the coming days.
On the men's side, Chen finished fourth place in the finals to secure his berth at the 2021 NCAA Championships after recording a score of 718.80. His qualification on the 3m marks his second-straight year of earning a berth on the 3m to the NCAA Championships.
Luke McDivitt just missed the cutoff today as he placed eighth overall in the finals. McDivitt will continue action vying for a berth tomorrow from the platform.

Tuesday's action will consist of the women's 3m prelims at 11:30 a.m. MT and the men's platform prelims at 11:40 a.m. MT. Finals on Tuesday will begin at 1:50 p.m. MT for both the men and women. The three days of the Zone Diving Championships will all be live streamed for free via
