CLEVELAND – Saturday's match-up between Utah lacrosse and Cleveland State showed great promise for what's to come between the two future ASUN opponents as Utah held on for the 11-9 road victory thanks to a late 3-0 run and 15 saves from keeper
Zion Dechesere inside the Krenzler Bubble.
Â
Ryan Rogers broke the seal to open scoring for both teams after lunging towards the crease and snuck one past the Cleveland State keeper at the 11:26 mark. The Vikings answered right back to tie things up at the 10:15 mark and from that point on neither team scored despite CSU continually attacking the Utah defense. Utah's offense finally broke through after Sammy Cambere connected with
Josh Rose for a huge strike down field. Utah (4-6) extended the lead to 3-1 with 30 ticks left in the first quarter when
Tyler Bradbury found
Jonathan Rose on the far side of the field.
Â
The second frame saw a bit more action with both teams exchanging goals throughout the quarter. After going down 5-4, Utah answered with a man-up goal from
Peter Hagan before
Carson Moyer gave Utah the go-ahead goal less than a minute later as the Utes went into the break on top 6-5.
Â
Scoring was again a seesaw affair to start the third quarter between the two teams with neither squad able to score more than one goal at a time. Out of the media break tied at 7-7,
Cole Brams took the ball himself after a foul on the faceoff and laced one into the net for the 8-7 lead with 7:27 left in the third. The Vikings (2-7) did not back down on their senior day and tied things up once again at 8-8. Â Â Â Â Â
Â
With 1:56 on the clock, Dechesere made a great save that he was able to outlet that found the elder Rose brother for the breakaway goal. That defensive stop led to a 3-0 run by the Utes with goals from Moyer and
Drew Wasserman afterwards to make it an 11-8 advantage for Utah.
Â
Cleveland State cut the lead to 11-9 with 5:29 left to play short after Utah was hit with a penalty for the man-up goal. With the clock on its side, Utah was able to fend off multiple attempts from the Vikings and held on for the 11-9 victory.
