SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's basketball team opened Pac-12 play on Sunday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center by hosting No. 2 Stanford. The Utes dropped a heartbreaker as they were defeated 83-73 by the Cardinal.
Utah's (9-4, 0-1 Pac-12) Jenna Johnson led the team with 15 points on the afternoon on 4-of-8 shooting. Gianna Kneepkens followed with 10 points against the Cardinal (13-3, 4-0 Pac-12). Utah continued to knock down the long-range shot as they shot 11-for-28 on three-pointers in the game.
Utah scored the first bucket of the game before the Cardinal answered back by going on a 10-0 run and taking a 10-2 lead with 5:42 left in the quarter. The Utes continued to chip away at the lead, and Peyton McFarland converted an old-fashioned three-point play. Utah trimmed the lead down to one, 14-13, after a three by Dasia Young to end the first quarter.
Coming out of halftime, the Cardinal and Utah traded buckets. After the lead was down to two, Utah scored five straight points capped by a Kneepkens three, putting the Utes ahead 47-40. Utah's lead continued to shrink, and with 3:59 left in the third quarter, Stanford took a 52-51 lead. After a Johnson layup, the Utes responded and took a five-point lead, 60-55. After three-quarters of play, Utah held a three-point lead, 63-60.
The Utes shooting cooled off in the fourth quarter as they shot 2-for-11 from the floor in the frame. Kennady McQueen hit a three, putting the Utes ahead by four, 68-64. Stanford responded and held the Utes to five points over the final 6:40 of the contest, and Utah dropped a heartbreaker to No. 2 Stanford, 83-73.
GAME LEADERS
Utah had two players score in double-figures as Jenna Johnson led the way with 15 points and Gianna Kneepkens followed with 10 points. Senior Dru Gylten added six assists in the game and now has 480 in her career. Kennady McQueen led the team with five rebounds.
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME: HEAD COACH LYNNE ROBERTS
"This was a tough loss. Stanford is really good. What they did in the fourth quarter is kind of what they've done all season, win close games. If you look at the shooting percentages in the fourth quarter, that's kind of what the game comes down to. We missed a lot. They made shots and shot for percentage."
STANDOUT STAT
Dru Gylten continues to dish out dimes this season. She had six assists against Stanford and now has 480 assists in her career. This is the fifth most in program history for Utah. She is 62 assists away from moving into fourth on the all-time list.
