Utah Beach Volleyball Goes Undefeated Saturday, Downs Irvine Valley College and CSU Bakersfield

IRVINE, Calif. - Utah beach volleyball picked up two non-conference wins on Saturday after earning a 4-1 win over Irvine Valley College and a 3-2 win over CSU Bakersfield to close out the event in Irvine. With the pair of victories, Utah moves to 8-9 overall this season and has recorded the most wins in a season since the program started in 2017.Â
Utah opened the day against hosts Irvine Valley College where courts three, four and five earned straight-set victories. Samantha Leight and Marissa Koch picked up a 21-9, 21-15 on court three, while Sommer Daniel and Lauren Sayre followed with a 21-11, 21-5 victory on court four. Rounding out the dominant wins was Kylie Pitzak and Sydney Jacinto with a 21-11, 21-9 victory on court five.
The final point for Utah of the dual was earned in three sets after Amaya Messier and Sage Patchell won their first set 23-21, but dropped the next 21-15. In the third set, the Utes got it done on court one 15-9 to take the dual 4-1.Â
Utah then finished the weekend in Irvine with a thriller against CSU Bakersfield where the Utes picked up the 3-2 victory. Jacinto and Pitzak picked up their sixth straight win together on court five with a huge 22-20, 21-19 victory. Courts one and three fell for Utah, but the match would stay in play after Daniel/Sayre and Grace Andrews and Bella Vezzani each picked up a first set win and were headed to third sets.Â
Both Daniel/Sayre and Andrews/Vezzani earned 15-9 wins in the third set to push Utah to a 3-2 win. The eight wins this season is a program record after Utah had previously had a high of five wins in a season.Â
Utah will play at Manhattan Beach Pier twice on Sunday, Apr. 3, with matches against No. 9 Hawaii and No. 5 Loyola Marymount. Utah and Hawaii will compete at 12:30 p.m. MT, while Utah and LMU will play at 3:30 p.m. MT.
