SALT LAKE CITY – Utah's
Summer Stanfield and
Elias Petersen were among those honored by the Pac-12 when the conference released its weekly swimming and diving awards on Wednesday. Stanfield was chosen as the league's women's swimmer of the week and the men's diver of the week award went to Petersen.
Stanfield garnered this recognition by picking up four first places finishes over the course of two meets against Colorado Mesa. Her week started with a pair of victories on Friday, one of which came in the 200 freestyle, where she clocked in at 1:52.18, and the second coming in the 400 individual medley, which she finished in 4:23.05. On Saturday, Stanfield finished first in both the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 56.29 and 2:04.79, respectively. This makes four dual meets in 2022-23 in which Stanfield has taken the top spot in more than one race.
Peterson got his opportunity on Saturday and, competing in his first collegiate meet, topped the field by a wide margin in both men's diving events and posted NCAA Championship qualifying scores. In the men's 1m, he piled up 372.60 points, the most by a Ute in the 1m this season and the program's fourth-highest mark all-time. That came after he started the day with a 3m performance that graded out at 349.35 and also put him atop the leaderboard.
These are the first weekly awards earned by Utah's swimming and diving student-athletes in 2022-23.
Lizzy DeCecco,
Holly Waxman and
Tony Chen all collected diver of the week awards in 2021-22.
