SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis team picked up a 7-0 win in their season opener today against the Idaho State Bengals. The Utes are currently undefeated with a 3-0 record.Â
"Credit to Idaho State for the competitive fire that they came out with both in singles and doubles, the team did a good job of raising their level but we need to execute much better," said head coach
Ric Mortera. "Our freshman did a good job managing their first dual matches at home. Anastasia (Goncharova) and Madison (Tattini) took care of business and played pretty solid. Katya (Townsend) and Samantha (Horwood) were put in some challenging situations and found a way through. I think that will be very beneficial in the long term. Overall, I'm happy that we were able to get some quality court time in before heading to North Carolina."
Utah opened its afternoon with doubles. Finishing first on court two, Katya Townsend and Samantha Horwood beat the Idaho State team, Hana Cho and Leah Kuruvilla, 6-4. Following closely behind them, Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini clinched the doubles point against Bengals, Lola and Sol O'Lideadha, 6-4. Marcela Lopez and Katya Hersh made up a three-game deficit to tie up the match 4-4. From there, they took the match into tie-breakers where they defeated their opponents, Megan Lang-Gould and Sydney Morris, 7(7)-6(3).Â
Kaila Barksdale finished first in singles against L. O'Lideadha, winning 6-3, 6-0. Lopez won her match against Kuruvilla, 7-5, 6-1. Clinching the match for the Utes, Goncharova beat S. O'Lideadha with matching set scores of 6-3. Tattini followed closely behind her with her victory against Lang-Gould, 6-3, 6-4. Horwood took her match against Morris to a third set and won, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. After a long and tough match, Townsend took her third set against Cho into a tie-breaker where she clinched the match, 6-4, 6-2. 7(7)-6(4).
