SALT LAKE CITY –
Summer Stanfield and
Evan VanBrocklin both snagged a pair of victories and helped lead the University of Utah swimming and diving team past the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, as the Utah women triumphed, 128-38, and the men won, 112-52, on Friday afternoon inside the Ute Natatorium.
"I think we competed really well," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "It was one of those meets where we thought we could walk in and swim a few events and race well. Some people had to step up and they stepped up in every way. No one was complaining, everyone was competing hard, lots of attitudes and smiles and we ended up doing really well. I'm not surprised because I know we can do it, I'm just happy that we actually stepped up and did what we needed to do."
Persson watched his team take the top spot in 16 of 18 events on Friday, including first place finishes by Stanfield in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:52.18, and 400 individual medley, which she finished in 4:23.05. VanBrocklin bested the field in the men's 200 free, posting a time of 1:41.02, and the 200 butterfly, with a mark of 1:51.46, and for both swimmers, this marked the second straight dual meet in which they tallied multiple wins. For Stanfield, this was the third time she's accomplished that feat in 2022-23, as she also did it against UCLA on Oct. 28.
The Utes had a perfect day in the relay races, starting with
Norah Hay,
Madison Story, Stanfield and
Reagan Cathcart capturing the women's 400 medley in 3:48.51 and
Parker McOmber,
Baylor Lewis, VanBrocklin and
Finn O'Haimhirgin pulled out the men's 400 medley for Utah with a time of 3:20.40. In the women's 200 free relay, Cathcart was joined by
Erin Palmer,
Katie Hale and
Maddie Woznick to top the field in 1:33.66 and
Lucas Calderon, O'Haimhirgin,
JP Hynes and VanBrocklin were the four who landed atop the men's 200 free relay in 1:24.02.
In between those relays, the list of victors for the home side included
Marlene Sandberg in 1000 free, with a mark of 10:35.52,
Dylan Becker in the men's 1000 free, touching in 9:38.83,
Lily Milner in the women's 100 backstroke, finishing in 57.65 and
Charity Pittard in the women's 100 breaststroke, checking in at 1:04.55.
Matt Wilcox and his time of 57.84 set the pace in the men's 100 breaststroke,
Sadie Edwards was the fastest swimmer in the women's 200 butterfly at 2:09.59, Cathcart swam into first in the women's 50 free in 23.59 and
