SALT LAKE CITY – Just a few days removed from an impressive performance in their first home meet of the season, the University of Utah diving team is getting back to work in Tucson, Ariz., where they'll be competing against the Arizona Wildcats on Tuesday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
"This will be a good meet for us to get some competition experience," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner, "and to be able to work on some of the corrections we're trying to make. Arizona is always a strong team and they have several NCAA qualifiers, so it's also a good challenge to see where we stack up early on."
Last Time Out
Marschner saw his divers get off to a phenomenal start to the season on Saturday against an LSU Tigers squad that sent eight divers to the NCAA Championships in 2023. The Utes swept all four diving events, led by sophomore
Elias Petersen, who placed first in both the men's 1m and 3m, posting scores of 325.88 and 372.98, respectively. Both of those performances surpassed the NCAA Automatic Qualifying standard.
Utah's female divers were just as sharp, starting with
Holly Waxman on the 1m, where she piled up 306.75 points to land atop the podium. In the 3m, Grant finished 30 points ahead of the next closest finisher with a score of 292.58, adding to a day in which she posted a mark of 286.13 in 1m. Waxman and Grant's totals in the 1m, as well as Grant's in the 3m all met the NCAA qualifying standard.
Looking Ahead
Utah's swimmers will have their next chance to compete on Oct. 21 at the MPSF Open Water Swimming Championships, while the team's next home event will be a meet against the Wildcats on Oct. 27.
