SALT LAKE CITY –
Emilia Nilsson Garip shattered the Utah record in the 3m, while four different swimmers posted top three finishes as student-athletes from the University of Utah swimming and diving team competed at the Texas A&M Invitational at the Texas A&M Natatorium in College Station, Texas and at the CMU Invitational at the El Pomar Natatorium in Grand Junction, Colo, both of which got underway on Wednesday.
Texas A&M Invitational
On the Boards
Nilsson Garip started the day by recording a score of 318.15 in the prelims, putting her in second place. She was joined in the top nine by
Holly Waxman, who landed in third with 317.45 points and
Kathryn Grant, thanks to a score of 286.95.
In the final, Nilsson Garip's point total shot up to 375.65, putting her atop the leaderboard and breaking the previous program-best of 359.62, set by Kelsey Patterson in 2005. Only Hailey Hernandez of Texas has put up a higher score on the 3m so far in 2023-24.
Holly Waxman took third in the final with a mark of 328.50, while Grant's total of 302.70 put her seventh.
On the men's side,
Elias Petersen finished fourth in the 1m prelims with 337.20 points, then upped that mark to 357.00 in the final for a fourth-place finish. All the marks posted by Utah's divers in their finals topped the NCAA Championships Qualifying benchmark
"We had a sensational first day here," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "We're really happy with how the women did. We're the only team with three women in the A final and all three of them taking top six was great. Emilia getting a win and setting new school record was phenomenal. The old one had been around for 18 years, so its good to see that one go. Elias did really well on his 1m list. He hit really everything and he had the best dive of the meet with his first. We're going to look to build on things for tomorrow."
In the Pool
The Utes' first top three finish of the day came in the men's 200 free relay, where
Jaek Horner,
Will Woodall,
Davis Stachelek and
Jackson Kehler posted a third-place finish with a time of 1:19.37. Soon after,
Jakub Walter came in third in the 500 free, clocking in at 4:24.30.
Horner took the top spot in the 200 IM C Final, finishing in 1:46.43 and first place in the D Final went to
Caleb Gallagher, thanks to a mark of 1:50.34.
Erin Palmer swam into second place in the 50 free, touching in 22.41 and the Utes finished the day by placing fourth in the men's 400 medley relay with a quartet of
Parker McOmber, Horner, Kehler,
Evan VanBrocklin.
"We had a good day today," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "I think it's always hard when it's the first day and people are nervous and just trying to get the first swim out of the way, whether it was this morning or this afternoon. But overall, we had some great performances, especially from
Erin Palmer and
Brandon Miller. I think tomorrow's going to be a much better day. We are usually stronger on day two. Some people will have to regroup and really put their head down and race and I think that will lead to some great performances."
CMU Invitational
Utah started the day in Colorado by collecting fifth in the women's 200 medley relay, as
Maile Andresen,
Isabella Riso,
Sofia Carlson and
Kyla Yetter finished in 1:46.88, followed by the men's quartet of
Jonathan Michaels,
Nick Mason,
Colin Parker and
Kellen Cameron swimming into fourth in men's 200 medley relay in 1:31.92. The squad's first top three finish in Colorado came courtesy of
Micah Ginoza in the 1000 free and his time of 9:33.89.
"We had a really good start to the meet," said assistant coach
Jordan Taylor. "The team was excited about this opportunity to race close to home. The 200 medley relay was a chance for some of our athletes to compete in a race they don't get to do very often, which led to them going in a bit more relaxed and we swam really well tonight. I feel like everyone did their part for their team and exceeded their own expectations."
Looking Ahead
The Utes have two more days of competition remaining in College Station and three days of action left in Colorado.
