GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2023 US Open got started for the University of Utah swimming team with efforts by
Summer Stanfield in the 200 individual medley and
Erin Palmer, who competed in the 50 freestyle, on Thursday in Greensboro, N.C.
"I thought Summer had a really good swim today," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "It was her second-best time ever in the 200 individual medley, so she should be happy.
Erin Palmer had a good swim in the 50 freestyle, but ultimately made a few mistakes that cost her the opportunity to post a best time and get a trial cut, so I think she will time trial that race again to improve it. But overall, it was a great first day and I think tomorrow's going to be better, as we have more swims and probably a little bit more competitive tomorrow."
Stanfield got Utah's day started with a time of 2:19.36 in the 200 IM, narrowly missing out on recording a new personal-best while placing 40th. Palmer was in the pool soon after in the 50 free and she clocked in at 26.30 to earn a share of 54th.
Looking Ahead
The Utes will be back in the pool on Friday, when there will be 10 events on the schedule at the US Open. Utah's divers will be competing on the first day of the Big Al Invite, which gets underway in Princeton, N.J.
