SALT LAKE CITY –
Elias Petersen and
Holly Waxman posted first-place finishes at the Big Al Invite in Princeton, N.J. and
Brandon Miller and
Summer Stanfield reached finals in their races at the US Open in Greensboro, N.C. for the University of Utah swimming and diving team on Friday.
In the Pool in North Carolina
Miller was responsible for one of Utah's best performances of the day, recording the eighth-fastest time in the 400 individual medley preliminary heats, finishing in 4:21.70. This put Miller in the 400 IM A final, where he also collected eighth place. In the women's 400 IM,
Summer Stanfield took 23rd in the morning, clocking in at 5:02.88 to earn a spot in the C final, where she posted a seventh-place finish.
Evan VanBrocklin placed 27th in the men's 100 fly with a mark of 54.25, reaching reserve status in the final.
Jakub Walter took 55th in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:52.37, while
Matt Wilcox put up a 44th place finish 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:03.58. Stanfield also competed in the 100 back, swimming into 38th, while
Norah Hay landed in 66th in the same event.
Brandon Miller and
Parker McOmber both competed in the men's 100 back, Miller taking 33rd and McOmber placing 47th.
"I thought we had a great day today," said associate head coach
Michele Lowry. "To get a couple of final swims and Brandon making the big A final tonight was so exciting. This is always a hard time to swim fast and we stepped up and raced hard. Tomorrow is typically our best day, so I am excited to see what we can do to finish out this meet. Just being able to represent Utah at this event is a big deal and I couldn't be more proud of these athletes."
On the Boards in New Jersey
Waxman got Utah's day of diving started with a score of 302.85 to push her through to the 3m final and she then upped her total to 336.55. With that, she earned first-place in the event, the first time Waxman has won the 3m so far in 2023-24, and she also recorded and NCAA Championship qualifying score.
Kathryn Grant posted an automatic qualifying score of her own in the 3m at 289.70, which placed her second in the B final.
Sydney Kowalski placed 36th.
In 1m, Petersen easily bested the field in the prelims, racking up 343.80 points, then he managed a score of 337.30 in the final to maintain his hold on the top spot and eclipse the NCAA qualifying benchmark. This marks the fourth time Petersen has finished atop the leaderboard in the 1m during his sophomore campaign.
Jake Suchowski ended the day in 13th.
"It was great start for us today against a pretty deep field," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "It came down to the final dive for Holly and Elias and they both buried their dives with the pressure on. It was great to see them rise to the occasion and perform at such a high level when they really needed it. Their level of diving has steadily risen throughout the year and I can see their confidence is building."

One more day of swimming remains for the Utes in North Carolina, while Utah's divers will enter their second day of competition in the Garden State on Saturday.
