THIS WEEK
The University of Utah men's golf team has started the spring by posting their lowest score of the year at the John Burns Intercollegiate and earning their highest finish at the Desert Intercollegiate. The next opportunity for the Utes to continue building on their positive spring momentum comes at the Bandon Dunes Championship, which will be held at the Bandon Dunes Course from March 12-14 in Bandon, Ore.
This is the sixth straight year Utah has teed off at Bandon Dunes and in each of those years, the Utes have placed in the top five. That streak is highlighted by a tournament championship in 2019, when
Blake Tomlinson won the event's individual title and two more Utes finished in the top 10 to help Utah claim a score of 12-over and first place.
In 2021, the Utes placed second, followed by a fourth-place showing in 2022. Tomlinson and Barcos were Utah's top finishers a year ago, both tying for 11
th. Barcos was 1-under in the both the first and third rounds before finishing with a 4-over 217, while Tomlinson's consistent play led to him finishing with an identical number. Oregon took home the tournament's 2022 championship.
THE FIELD
The Ducks will be back at Bandon Dunes to defend that crown, but they'll have to fend off challenges from 15 other teams, including Utah and Pac-12 rivals Oregon State and Washington State. The field also includes Air Force, Boise State, Drexel, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, SIU Edwardsville, Seton Hall and South Dakota.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
Utah's lineup will remain unchanged from their last tournament as
Braxton Watts,
Javier Barcos,
Martín León,
Go Nakatsukasa and
Brandon Robison will be making up the team's lineup once again and
Tanner Telford will be playing as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS: Head Coach Garrett Clegg
"This tournament is always completely different than any event we play all year," said Clegg. "The golf course is a links course on the ocean with typically extreme weather. This week is forecasted for high winds and a decent amount of rain. The key to success is embracing the elements, the different type of course and competing with everything we have. If we can do that we will have a lot of success. Traditionally, we have done great at Bandon."
LAST TIME OUT
In a field of 16 teams at the Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif., the Utes managed a fourth-place finish, their highest during the 2022-23 campaign so far and those 54 holes were highlighted by the play of
Martín León and
Javier Barcos.
Barcos snagged his third top-10 spot of the year, thanks in large part to a 3-under 69 he carded in round one and a pair of late birdies on the tournament's final day. In each of the Utah's first two spring competitions, Barcos has posted only one round above par and he's continued lowering his stroke average for the season to 71.6. Over Utah's last four tournaments, Barcos' stroke average stands at 70.8.
León achieved his highest finish of the season by tying for 15th in Palm Desert and he was also on his game in round one, recording a 1-under 71 that included three birdies. This came after a performance at the John Burns Intercollegiate in which he was 3-under, his lowest score of the year to this point. In six rounds of golf so far this spring, León owns a stroke average of 71.7, an almost four stroke improvement from the fall and a number he'll have a chance to keep improving on at Bandon Dunes.
Robison achieved the highest finish and posted the lowest score of his freshman year at the Desert Intercollegiate, shooting 2-over and placing 22nd. He also matched his lowest 18-hole mark of the year with a second-round 71, then started the final round by staying at even-par on the front nine. Watts and Nakatsukasa will be attempting to recapture the form they showed at the John Burns Intercollegiate in February, when they both put up scores under par and Watts tied for 10th.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
All three days of the tournament will begin with an 8:30 a.m. PT shotgun start and 18 holes will be played by each golfer on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
