The University of Utah women's tennis team defeated the Portland Pilots in a close match-up with a final score of 4-3.Â
Utah began the day off with Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez securing their doubles match on court three against Pilot duo Meagan Pearson and Alaia Rubio Perez, 6-0. Portland was able to come back on court two with their victory over Samantha Horwood and Katya Townsend 6-4. Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini kept a close game with Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge, but ultimately lost the match 6-4 and putting the Utes one point down.Â
Lopez kicked off singles strong, earning Utah their first point against Pearson, 7-5, 6-2. Portland took back the lead on court six when Horwood was defeated by Rubio Perez, 6-4, 7-5.Â
Barksdale set the Utes even with the Pilots once again after winning in the third set against Rimona Rouf, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Tattini was able to also defeat her opponent, Pethybridge, in the third set, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Townsend lost to Zelic, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, leaving the game-clinching point to court four. There, Goncharova claimed victory over Aleksandra Dimitrijevic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to win it all for Utah.Â
