INDIANAPOLIS –
University of Utah swimmers
Jaek Horner and
Andrei Ungur have both earned the chance to compete at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, which are scheduled for March 22-25 in Minneapolis. Horner will be competing in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, while Ungur will be swimming in the 200 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke.
Ungur's mark of 45.00 in the 100 back not only earned him a medal at the Pac-12 Championships and broke his own program record but also stands as ninth-fastest in the country, making him a shoo-in for a place at nationals. Ungur also posted a program record in 200 backstroke at 1:41.03 at the Pac-12 Championships and it was that time that sent him on the nationals, as did a mark of 19.80 in the 50 free.
Horner earned his invite in the 200 IM with a time of 1:45.08 that he recorded at the Big Al Invitational in December that is also third-fastest in Utah history. Horner broke the program record in the 100 and 200 breaststroke during the 2023 season, clocking in at 51.78 in the former event and 1:53.85 in the latter and both marks were good enough him an invite in Minneapolis.
Ungur and Horner added their names to list that already included Utah divers Holly Waxman, Kathryn Grant,
Luke McDivitt and
Elias Petersen, all of whom will also be heading for the NCAA Championships. Waxman and Grant will have their chance to compete at the Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held on March 15-18 in Knoxville, Tenn.
