Utah Beach Volleyball Defeats Oregon 4-1, Falls To #2 USC

Utes earn first Pac-12 win of the season.
STANFORD, Calif. – The Utah Beach Volleyball team picked up their first Pac-12 win of the season after defeating Oregon 4-1 on Saturday at the Pac-12 North Invitational. The Utes flipped the outcome from its match against the Ducks a week ago to take the win this time around in the rematch.
Oregon took the 1-0 lead to start the match after winning on court four, but Savannah Cottam and Sonja Wessel quickly evened the dual after pulling out a 22-20 victory in the first set and then running away with a 21-11 victory. Bella Vezzani and Abby Karich gave Utah the advantage in the match with a 21-17, 21-13 win on court two.
Looking to clinch the win, Utah had the momentum and picked up the first set on court three despite the top court going to the Ducks in the first set. Grace Andrews and Chloe Narancich sealed the deal with a 21-15 win in the second set to clinch the match 3-1 with the top court still playing.
Katie McAlister and Amaya Messier bounced back in their second set, winning 21-17 and forcing a third set. The Ute duo picked up the 15-11 win in the final set to give Utah a 4-1 win over Oregon.
In the second match of the day, Utah faced the nation's second-ranked team in the USC Trojans. Sydney Jacinto and Kylie Pitzak came out strong on court four, picking up a 21-18 win in the first set. The Trojan duo on court four turned the momentum around in the second set to force a third, while their teammates on court five picked up the first dual point shortly after. In the third set, Pitzak and Jacinto fell 15-7 as USC would go up 2-0 over Utah.
The Trojans established early leads on courts one through three, taking every first set and eventually rolling on to sweep the Utes.
The Utes will play their only home match of the season next Wednesday, Apr. 12, against Salt Lake Community College. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. MT at the Lassonde Courts on campus in Salt Lake City. After the home match, Utah will travel to Tempe, Ariz., for competition on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 14-15. Utah plays Arizona State, Arizona Christian, Park University and Grand Canyon to close out the regular season.
