SALT LAKE CITY – Five members of the Utah Ski Team were recognized on Tuesday with selection to the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team.
The Utes picked for All-District accolades include
Wilhelm Normannseth and
Madison Hoffman from the alpine team alongside Nordic's
Samuel Hendry,
Luke Jager and
Novie McCabe. All five were among Utah's lineup to race at the 2023 NCAA Championships, helping the Utah Ski Team win its 16
th national championship all-time and fourth in a row.
The five All-District honorees now advance to the Academic All-America ballot, with the selections for that award to be announced in early June.
A First Team All-American in 2023,
Hendry owns five NCAA All-American awards in his career and graduated this past month with his degree in biology. The Canmore, Alberta, native finish fourth in the men's 20K classic race at the 2023 NCAA Championships. He was named All-RMISA First Team in a year that saw Hendry ski to five podiums, including a victory. Hendry completed the international seven-stage Tour de Ski in January 2023 and received an Academic All-America nod following the 2022 season.
Hoffman, a finance major, was one of the top comeback stories in collegiate skiing during the 2023 season. After missing almost all of 2022 due to injury, the junior persevered through recovery and capped it off with individual NCAA championships both in women's slalom and giant slalom. It earned Hoffman a pair of All-America citations and made the Sydney, Australia, native the first Utah skier since 1990 to sweep the women's alpine NCAA titles. Hoffman totaled four collegiate wins on the year and was named All-RMISA First Team. Her past academic accolades include the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll and USCSCA All-Academic Team.
Graduating with his economics degree,
Jager was tabbed RMISA MVP in men's classic and went on to earn Second Team All-American honors at the NCAA Championships; it was Jager's second career All-American award. He had two collegiate wins in 2023 and three in his career. Jager competed at the 2023 FIS U23 World Ski Championships, including at 12th-place finish in the men's classic sprints. He also represented the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
McCabe, a political science major out of Winthrop, Washington, was the 2023 NCAA Individual Champion both in women's 5K freestyle and 20K classic. It brought McCabe to 19 career collegiate victories, including wins in her final five starts of the 2023 season. The 2022 U.S. Olympian was named RMISA Women's Freestyle MVP and All-RMISA First Team in '23, going on to win both races at the RMISA Championships which also served as the NCAA West Regional. She owns three NCAA individual championships in her career, which includes both women's Nordic races this year plus the 5K classic title in 2022.
Normannseth, a junior from Oslo, Norway, studies finance at the U. He was named a First Team All-American in 2023 after finishing as the individual runner up in men's slalom at the NCAA Championships in Lake Placid, New York. The RMISA MVP in men's slalom captured eight race victories during the 2023 collegiate season, including the NCAA West Regional. Normannseth has previously been named to both the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll and USCSCA All-Academic Team.
