EUGENE, Ore. – Former Utah cross country and track & field All-American
Emily Venters finished seventh-overall with a time of 32:45.57 Thursday night under the lights of Hayward Field at the USATF Outdoor Championships.
Â
"Super fun to go out there with no pressure and just see what I could do," Venters said postrace. "Also, it was great experience so that next year I can hopefully hang in there and really be able to fight for a spot!"
Â
Running with her Utah singlet, Venters didn't shy away running against a field of professionals and three other collegians as she kept pace with the lead group through the first 3200m of action. She then picked up the pace and moved from seventh to fourth shortly thereafter before jumping to third by the time the front pack reached the 4400m mark.
Â
With Venters on the heels of Kasandra Parker and Karissa Schweizer, she slowly picked up her stride to pass Schweizer before taking the lead heading out of turn three with 3400m left to go. However, that lead for Venters was short-lived as the pros began show their strength with eight laps remaining as she dropped back to seventh – where she would eventually finish.
Â
Her time of 32:45.57 is the fastest 10k mark of any runner with a collegiate affiliation at the USATF Outdoor Championships since Erin Finn (Michigan) ran a 32:00.46 in 2017.
